Volleyball Suffers Loss to Lakers

Cougar volleyball team in action

The Genesee Community College volleyball team took to the road Thursday to face Finger Lakes Community College with both teams battling for the fifth spot in the region.

The Cougars couldn't build any continuous momentum in dropping three sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-20, especially after a 12-day layoff since its last competition.

Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto led the team in digs with 16 and aces with six. Grace Zandrowicz had a team-high eight kills, while Lyndsey Rowland recorded four blocks (one solo).

Genesee held its last lead at 5-4 in the first set before finding itself down nine points at 23-14. A fierce Cougar rally would earn nine of the next 10 points to get within one at 24-23 before falling 25-23.

Genesee started out well in the second set and built a 14-10 lead before the Lakers took five of the next six points to tie the contest at 15 apiece. Finger Lakes continued its momentum with 10 of the last 15 points to take the middle set 25-20.

In the third set, Genesee built three early three-point leads at 4-1 and 7-4 after securing the set's first three points. The Cougars last lead was at 10-9 as the Lakers took nine of the next 11 for an 18-12 lead. Despite being down six, Genesee rallied to get within a pair of points at 21-19 before Finger Lakes took four of the last five for a third set 25-20 win.

The Cougars will next compete in pod play Oct. 13 against Corning, Broome and host Tompkins Cortland.
