Cougars Split First Two Matches Before Heartbreaking Third

It was a long day for the Genesee Community College volleyball team, but after 450 combined points on the day the Cougars came away 1-2 despite out-pointing oppositions 238-212.

After splitting matches between Cayuga and Jefferson, Genesee finished the day in a dog fight with host Onondaga. The five-set marathon went to the Lazers with a 15-13 set win in the fifth.  Prior to that last set, Genesee held a 96-95 edge in points while splitting the first four sets.

Onondaga took the first set 25-21 and the Cougars responded with a 27-25 win in the second set. The Lazers took the third at 25-23, but once again Genesee came back with a 25-20 win to send it to a fifth and deciding set.

Against OCC, Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto led the team in kills (14) and aces (4), while Audriana Reeves had a team-high 25 digs. Lyndsey Rowland lead the block brigade with four.

In the day's opening match, Genesee swept Cayuga 3-0 with both opening sets going 25-9 before the final set going 25-14.

Against Cayuga, Pinto led the team in kills (8) and digs (9). Rowland led the team in blocks with four, while Sha-Ony Obispa and Kaitlyn VanSkiver each recorded a team-high four aces.

In the middle match of the day, the Cougars couldn't get anything going against Jefferson with a pair of 25-17 bookend losses with the middle set going 25-20.

Against the Cannoneers, Pinto led the team in kills (13) and digs (18). Obsipa had a team-high two aces, while VanSkiver added a team-high pair of blocks.

Genesee next hosts Monroe Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.
