The Genesee Community College volleyball team traveled to a second-consecutive weekend of pod play involving three opponents. This time the team was off to Finger Lakes Community College Sept. 16, and after two weekends, the Cougars stand with a 5-1 record in pod play.

The most grueling match of the day was the team's finale against Jefferson Community College where the Cougars won 3-2 in a five-set, back-and-forth affair. Genesee took the fifth and deciding set 15-12 after ending Jefferson's two-win set streak that allowed the Cannoneers to tie the match after trailing 2-0.

Perhaps Genesee had its best start of any set in its second against Jefferson after the Cougars came out of the gate at 10-0 off five aces by Sha-Ony Obispa. She would finish with seven for the match along with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sydney DeVay had a team-high 16 digs, while Grace Zandrowicz added a dozen kills and Aleah Foos and Lyndsey Rowland finished with six blocks each.

The Cougars had a good warm-up game to help with the Jefferson win by facing an undefeated Onondaga team that has beaten nationally-ranked Monroe. According to head coach Tricia Ziebarth, Onondaga spreads the ball to all positions with impressive court support. Although Genesee was unable to give the Lazers their first loss, three Cougars had impressive performances that included Obispa with six kills, DeVay with eight digs and four blocks from Foos.

The Cougars opened pod play with a win against Cayuga, with the match tied at 1-1. Genesee finished strong by taking the next two sets and recording their first win of the day and fourth-consecutive in pod play.The team was led by Zandrowicz's eight kills and a dozen digs. Audriana Reeves had 13 digs, Mikoto Hasegawa three aces, and six blocks coming from both Foos and Rowland.

The Cougars next face NJCAA D-III No. 9 Monroe Community College on the road Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. Monroe is currently 11-1 with its lone loss to Onondaga.
