Genesee Wins Two of Three at Home POD Tournament

The Genesee Community College volleyball team won two out of three matches at its home Region III POD tournament on Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-8 in regional play this season.

GCC began the day with a three sets to one win over Mohawk Valley CC (25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 26-24). The victory snapped a seven-match losing streak and was Genesee's first win since Sept. 17.

The Cougars then won its second match of the day, winning back-to-back matches for the first time this season, by defeating Herkimer College 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23). GCC trailed 16-8 in the final game but stormed back to win the set and the match, winning 17 of the final 24 points.

Genesee ended the day with a strong showing against Fulton-Montgomery CC, which is undefeated in regional play after a three-win day on Saturday. FMCC now holds an 11-0 record after the Raiders defeated Genesee in four games, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21).

Naomi Hyde and double-digit kills in all three matches and finished the day with 43. She also added five total aces and 29 total digs. Kristi Knutson had a team-high 17 kills in GCC's win over MVCC and finished the afternoon with 31 total kills, 30 total digs and nine aces. Asuka Taguchi totaled 22 digs and 17 kills, Rachel Chervonyak finished with 15 blocks, Sarah Kuhn had 83 total assists and Tommi Rutherford added 52 digs.

Genesee (5-11) will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Cara Bryant Tournament at Onondaga CC.
