The No. 6 Genesee Community College women's soccer team beat visiting Finger Lakes Community College 3-0 and improved to 12-2 on the season Oct. 10.

Cougar goalkeeper Jaclyn Guzdek recorded her ninth shutout of the season – the most of any National Junior College Athletic Association D-III women's soccer goalkeeper.

Genesee donned pink uniforms on Sophomore Recognition Night, where each second-year team member identified someone from the GCC campus who made a difference or enhanced their experience at GCC. Two of those sophomores accounted for all of Genesee's scoring.

Miko Yamashita finished with a five-point night after scoring a pair of goals – including the game winner – and one assist. Leah Czechowski had the other Cougar goal and also added an assist to round out the scoring.

Last year's only NJCAA All-American from the GCC women's soccer team, Yamashita was inspired with her parents in attendance that traveled from Japan to be on hand for Sophomore Night.

Czechowski also had team-highs in shots and shots on goal with eight and four, respectively.

In addition to Guzdek, Yamashita and Cartwright; seven other sophomores were recognized including: Molly Reyngoudt, Ryley O'Mara, Allison Becker, Rachel Ladd, Bri Heers, Katline Cartwright and  Julie Kommer.

Yamashita scored the winning goal after 10 minutes and Czechowski padded the Cougar lead to 2-0 about 20 minutes into the game before Yamashita added her second with about seven minutes left in the first half.

Genesee out-shot the Lakers 38-1 with 22 shots finding the net, and also held an edge in corner kicks 8-1.

The women's soccer team travels to SUNY Adirondack Oct. 14 for a 1 p.m. start.
