No. 8 Women’s Soccer Team Upsets No. 5 Herkimer with Shutout Win

The No. 8 Genesee Community College women's soccer team upset visiting No.5 Herkimer 2-0 Oct 6.

The contest was decided in the game's first 90 seconds after National Junior College Athletics Association All-American Miko Yamashita scored the game winner.

Two dozen minutes into the contest, Katline Cartwright scored the Cougars' second goal. Leah Czechowski earned assists on both goals to join teammates Yamashita and Cartwright with two points on the afternoon.

Jaclyn Guzdek was perfect at the opposite end with six saves to record her nation-leading eighth shutout of the season.

Genesee dominated from the get-go while building a 12-3 shot lead in the first half. Play was much closer in the second with the Cougars holding a 9-4 shot advantage.

Ten Cougar shots found the target with three each coming from Cartwright and Czechowski. Genesee also held an edge in corner kicks at 8-6.

The Cougars next host Finger Lakes Oct 10 at 4 p.m.
