Genesee Rallies to Drop North Country

GCC Women's Lacrosse 2 go for ball

The GCC women's lacrosse team rallied back from an early four goal deficit on Saturday morning to defeat visiting North County CC 9-6.

The Saints scored the first four goals of the game and held the lead late into the first half.

Molly Barden got GCC on the board with a goal at the 7:57 mark off of an assist from Olivia Steedman to get Genesee to within three, and Sarah Williams followed with a goal less than a minute later to cut the North Country lead in half.

GCC found itself with a free position shot with less than three minutes to go in the first, and Kali Wright took advantage by scoring the Cougars' third goal to cut the deficit down to one.

Barden scored the first goal of the second half for GCC on a man-up situation to tie the game at four. Leah Herman assisted on the goal which came at 17:44.

Jenna Lewis gave GCC the lead soon thereafter with a goal off of a free position shot, and followed with her second goal of the game at the 11:51 mark off of an assist from Katline Cartwright to give Genesee a 6-4 lead.

GCC extended its lead with three more goals in the second half to take a 9-4 advantage. Steedman, Allison Duhow and Barden each tallied a goal, which gave the Cougars nine in a row.

North Country broke its scoreless streak with a goal with 59 seconds to play, and added another goal with 28 seconds left before time ran out.

Barden finished with three goals, five ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers, Wright collected six ground balls, Kelsey Scott-Avery added two takeaways and three ground balls, and Herman won two draw controls, grabbed four ground balls and caused one turnover. 

Genesee's win is its second on the year and the Cougars improve to 2-3 overall. GCC will travel to No. 1 Monroe CC on Apr. 22 for its next contest. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
