Genesee Drops Home Opener to Erie

GCC Women's Lacrosse - player goes for ball with defender behind

In its return to action for the first time since 2015, the GCC women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Erie CC on Wednesday afternoon, 17-3.

Genesee was outshot 33-19 and the Kats had the edge in draw controls, 13-9.

Erie scored the first four goals of the game before Momoka Masuda put the Cougars on the board with a goal off of a free position shot.

After ECC scored back-to-back to take a 6-1 lead, Molly Barden scored after earning a draw control. The freshman went in on the Erie net uncontested and cut the deficit to 6-2.

Erie took a 9-2 lead into the second half and quickly took a 10-2 lead before Barden scored again at the 26:11 mark of the period to cut the lead down to seven.

Barden's second goal would mark the end of GCC's scoring, as ECC tallied the final seven goals of the game.

Jenna Lewis and Kali Wright each collected five ground balls for the Cougars, and Barden, Momoka, Sarah Williams and Claudia Cooney each finished with three ground balls. Williams, Lewis and Paige Biggins each caused one turnover.

Sarah Zakes logged all 60 minutes in net and stopped seven shots.

Genesee (0-1) will return to action on Apr. 5 on the road at No. 3 Onondaga CC. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
