Lady Cougars’ Second Half Rally Falls Just Short

Kierra Perl dribbles the ball against ECC

The Genesee Community College women's basketball team came on strong in the second half by out-scoring visiting Erie Community College 33-27, but their rally fell just short as the Kats pulled out a five-point win, 57-52 on Jan. 27.

The Cougars were down by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, but an 11-4 run brought Genesee within eight points after three quarters at 39-31. Kierra Perl's layup midway through the fourth got Genesee with four points at 45-41 and Rosalyn Sealey's jumper in the final 30 seconds got the Cougars within one score at 55-52 before the Kats ended the contest with a pair of free throws.

Perl led the team in scoring with 15 points with Reika Murota and Jasmine Holmes each adding nine. Holmes missed a double-double by a single point after pulling down a team-high 14 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks.

Murota got all of her nine from beyond the arc, while Sealey scored seven and Rachel Meyer added six. The Cougars pulled down 50 rebounds on the day and aside from Holmes' 14, five other Genesee players recorded between 5-7 boards. Sealey had seven with six coming from Meyer and Perl, while Sierra Chuddy and TaLia Burgess added five apiece.

The Cougars continue WNYAC play when they travel to Rochester to take on division-leading Monroe Community College Jan. 31 with a 5:30 p.m. start.
