Turnovers Doom Cougars in Home Opener Against Cuyahoga

The GCC women's basketball team was doomed by turnovers in its home opener on Friday night against visiting Cuyahoga CC, and lost for the fifth time to start the season, dropping a 74-45 contest to the Challengers.

17 first half turnovers and 32 total in the game set the Cougars back in a game where they trailed for most of the night.

Lauren Watson hit an early three to give GCC its only lead of the game at 3-2 less than a minute into the game. Watson ended the night with seven points.

Cuyahoga outscored Genesee 18-9 in the opening quarter and hit three first half shots from three-point range to take a 34-20 lead into halftime.

Genesee was held to just eight second half field goals, three of which came from Rosalyn Sealey who scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the second half, and were outrebounded 24-14 in the final two quarters.

Sealey finished the night with a double-double as she was the only Cougar to reach double figures in scoring and rebounding, collecting 14 boards. Norvonee Hall added eight points and eight rebounds, Lauren Watson chipped in seven points and Pamela Crespo added six points and two assists.

Genesee (1-5) will return to action on Sunday at Jefferson CC. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
