Cougar Swimmers Compete in Season Final Home Event

The Genesee Community College swimming teams hosted their last event of the 2017-18 season Feb. 3 and now head to district championships Feb. 16-18 at Monroe Community College.

At its annual "last chance" invitational, the Cougars hosted Herkimer County Community College with each team evenly taking the 40-plus events.

Three Cougars ended up taking three events each that included Angel Priest, Nanako Shiozawa and Ferran Martinez.

Priest won the 100 individual medley, 50-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Shiozawa captured the 200-yard individual medley, 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Martinez won the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle.

Two other Cougars won a pair of events each. Ryan Mahaney took the 50-yard butterfly and the 100-yard individual medley, while Joan Ferrer was the winner in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.

Genesee also won four total relays and also had individual winners in the two 50-yard events, two 100-yard events and one 200-yard event. Mady Roth captured the latter in freestyle competition, while Matthew Langerman (backstroke) and Bryant Springett (breaststroke) won at 100-yards. Nathan Richardson (backstroke) and Benjamin Vacanti (breaststroke) rounded out the winners at 50 yards.
