Weber Named Region III Softball Player of the Year

After a record-breaking season and a trip to the regional finals, GCC sophomore pitcher/infielder Mackenzie Weber (Wayland) was recently recognized as the Region III Division III Player of the Year for the 2017 season. Weber was recognized by Region III last weekend during the regional final four at Genesee Community College.

Weber's highlights this spring included a .559 batting average, 55 runs batted in and 12 home runs, all of which led the region. Her home run total was the second-highest in the nation and her batting average was third best. She broke the single season record at GCC for home runs, runs batted in, walks (22), and doubles (16), and set the career mark for home runs (21), batting average (.526), runs scored (78), walks (33), doubles (28), and runs batted in (82).

On the mound, Weber won 15 games which was tied for first in the region and struck out 90 batters, the fifth highest total in the region. She pitched to a 4.28 earned run average and won five straight decisions to end the regular season.

Genesee finished the season with a 19-16 overall record and advanced to the regional final four for the second time in the last three seasons as the No. 4 seed. The Cougars lost to Herkimer College in two games in the Region III-A Finals series and set team record for most home runs in a season with 23 and tied the single season record for most doubles with 66.
