Kaminski's Double Helps Cougars Walk-Off Against Onondaga

The GCC softball walked off to a victory in its home opener against Onondaga CC on Thursday, topping the Lazers 14-13 in a single game. Game two was postponed and will be made up at a later date.

OCC got on the board early on, scoring four times in the top of the first on three hits, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a fielding error.

The Cougars had a chance to get one back in the bottom of the inning, but stranded Shiori Ubukata in scoring position after she delivered a one out double.

OCC added to its lead with a run in the third, but GCC answered in a big way in the home half of the inning.The Cougars batted around and scored seven times to take a 7-5 lead. Sydney Brenton delivered a two-run triple and Mackenzie Weber and Amanda Stratton also drove home a run on singles in the frame.

Brenton led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and Genesee loaded the bases, but managed just one run on a fielding error to take an 8-5 lead after four.

Onondaga responded in the next half inning with five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run to take a 10-8 lead, but GCC answered with five runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Stratton and Faye Conley hit back-to-back singles to start the rally, and Ubukata and Weber delivered RBI's to help Genesee to a 13-10 lead after five.

OCC went quietly in the sixth and the Cougars were retired in order in the bottom of the inning.

The Lazers tied the game on a three-run home run in the top of the seventh before the stage was set for Joelle Kaminski who came through with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh. Weber reached on a one out walk and after a strikeout, Kaminski ended the game with a two out double that plated Weber to send GCC off with a 14-13 win.

Weber finished the game 2-2 at the plate and scored twice, Kaminski went 2-5 with an RBI, Brenton scored three runs and was 2-5 with a pair of RBI's, Conley collected three hits and scored twice and Abigail Noeth added two hits, including a double, and scored once.

Weber earned the win on the mound, tossing all seven innings allowing 13 runs on 11 hits while striking out five.

Genesee (3-5) will return to action on Sunday when the Cougars host SUNY Broome CC in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
