Genesee Season Ends in Regional Opener at Monroe

ROCHESTER, NY: The Genesee Community College softball season came to an end on Tuesday afternoon after the Cougars lost in the opening round of the Region III tournament to Monroe Community College 5-4.

Fifth-seeded Genesee, looking to make back-to-back appearances in the regional final four for the first time in school history, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after an RBI double by Mackenzie Weber.

Shannon Baker kept the fourth-seeded Tribunes' bats quiet through the first two innings and got run support in the third. GCC loaded the bases with one out and Kristin Hohn delivered a two-run single to put the visitors in front 3-0. Joelle Kaminski followed with an infield single that scored a run, and Genesee led 4-0 through two and a half innings.

The Tribunes cut into the lead in the home half of the third with a three-run home run and went ahead after back-to-back singles plated two more in the fourth.

Baker went the distance and allowed five runs, all earned, on nine hits and struck out five.

The Cougars got the tying run in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not cash in and finish the season with a 15-16 overall record.

Weber put together a three-hit effort and scored a run, Hohn added two hits and scored a run, Amanda Dow finished the game 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored and Baker added a hit and scored a run.

MCC advances to the Region III Final Four and will play a best of three series against No. 1 seed Herkimer College at host site GCC beginning on Friday.
