The Genesee Community College men's soccer team began defense of its nation crown with a 6-1 road win over Mohawk Valley Community College Sept. 1.

Rodrigo Albuquerque scored half of the Cougar goals with three, while adding a pair of assists in the win. Overall, the freshman was in on all but one score in an impressive collegiate debut.

Starting keeper Adrian Bergman recorded the win in net with three saves and no goals allowed, and gave way in relief to Matthies Meyer, who recorded one save.

A pair of Cougars registered three-points apiece with Hijiri Sano and Ryan Curtis each recording a goal and an assist.

Rounding out the scoresheet with assists was Jose Manoel Cavalini and Philip Melo.

The win extended the Cougars win streak to a dozen when combined with their last 11 wins of last season that ended with the National Junior College Athletic Association D-III men's soccer national championship. It also extended the team's unbeaten streak to 21 games.

The Cougars' home-season opener is Sept. 5 against Corning Community College at 6 p.m.
