No. 6 Cougars Shut Out Adirondack to Reach Regional Finals

The sixth ranked GCC men's soccer team will play for its second consecutive regional title this Sunday after advancing to the Region III Men's Soccer Championship finals with a 5-0 win over SUNY Adirondack in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Genesee, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, outshot the No. 7 seeded Timberwolves 17-1 in shots on goal and defeated the visitors for the second time this season. The Cougars held SUNY Adirondack scoreless in an 8-0 victory on Sept. 18.

Rafael Godoi gave the Cougars the lead in the fifth minute thanks to a set up by William Stone. Godoi recorded a hat trick in the game, netting another first half goal in the 31st minute and one in the 60th minute of the second half.

John Reed gave GCC a 2-0 lead in the opening half in the 29th minute off of an assist from Glenn Holmes.

The Cougars went into the break with a 3-0 lead after Godoi's second goal and with a 4-0 lead in the 84th minute, Job Ayuba netting the contest's final tally to end the scoring. Gareth Corrigan earned the assist.

GCC goalkeeper David Ormiston played all 90 minutes to earn the shutout and made one save.

The Cougars advance to the Region III District B championship game on Sunday and will play the No. 3 seed, SUNY Broome CC. The match will take place at Tompkins-Cortland CC at 4 p.m. The winner will be crowned District B champions of Region III and advance to the NJCAA National Tournament. Genesee is 2-3 in regional finals since 2011.
