Genesee Set to Defend Men's Lacrosse National Title

The GCC men's lacrosse team will defend its 2016 national championship as the No. 2 seed in this year's NJCAA Men's Lacrosse National Tournament, which will host its final four at Onondaga CC on May 13-14.

Genesee, the No. 2 nationally ranked team in the country, earned one of two first round byes awarded to the top two seeded teams in the tournament and will take on third-seeded Howard CC (Md.) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Howard advanced to the national semifinals after defeating Ocean County College (NJ) 23-6 in the opening round of the tournament on May 6. GCC beat HCC 11-9 in the only meeting of the year between the two schools on Apr. 8 at Howard, and the Cougars are 4-0 against the Dragons since 2014.

GCC surpassed the 100 win mark as a program this season in just its 10th year of intercollegiate competition, and enters the weekend with an 11-2 overall record in 2017. Genesee has advanced to the national tournament for the sixth time in the last seven years and captured its first ever Region III title this spring, defeating Monroe CC in the Group B finals, 16-11 on Apr. 29.

Top-seeded Onondaga CC will play No. 4 Nassau CC in the first national semifinals game at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The winner will advance to take on the Genesee/Howard winner at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the national championship game.

Genesee won its first ever men's lacrosse national championship in 2016, ending a seven year streak in which Onondaga won the title, and became just the third different school to be crowned national champion since 2006.
