Genesee Falls to Onondaga in National Championship Rematch

The No. 5 GCC men's lacrosse team fell to No. 1 Onondaga CC on Saturday afternoon in a rematch of last year's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship game. The Lazers held Genesee to just three second half goals to drop the Cougars 21-8.

GCC gave up the game's first goal less than two minutes into the first quarter, but took a 2-1 lead with back to back goals at the 11:59 and 9:38 marks. Patrick Bilbrey tallied the Cougars' first goal and Alex Mack followed off of an assist from Pat Van Bortle.

After OCC tied the game at two, Davis Prince put Genesee back in front with his first of three goals in the game with the assist credited to Sherman Williams. It would turn out to be GCC's last lead of the game, as Onondaga scored back-to-back to take a 4-3 advantage before Prince tied the game at four at the end of the period.

OCC scored five times in the second quarter and held Genesee to a single goal, scored by Mack at the 8:30 mark, and the Lazers took a 9-5 lead into half.

GCC had a chance to start the second half as the Cougars were a man-up for two non-releasable minutes, but Genesee could not break through and gave up an OCC shorthanded goal to fall behind 10-5 less than two minutes into the third. The Lazers tallied seven goals in the third quarter and outscored GCC 7-3 in the frame to take a 16-8 lead into the fourth.

Genesee went scoreless in the fourth and OCC added to its lead with five goals in the to earn the win.

Chance Gates led the GCC defense with five takeaways and four ground balls. Brad Hejmanowski won 13 face-offs and collected six ground balls and Williams finished with three takeaways.

Genesee falls to 3-2 on the season and will begin a four-game road stretch on Wednesday. The Cougars will travel to Mercyhurst North East for a 4 p.m. face-off.
