Men’s Basketball Team’s Second-Half Rally Sinks Lakers

Genesee Community College's Rahmel Thompson sank two buckets late in the second half to break an 82-82 tie to propel the men's basketball team to victory over Lakeland Community College 87-84 Nov. 21.

Four of the five Genesee starters recorded double-digit point performances, while two Cougars registered double-doubles. Brian Fobbs led the way with 24 points and 16 boards, while Jaheem Page had the other double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.

Brandon Peters added 20 points and Thompson had 17 in the win that started with a 7-0 run after Page scored the team's first five points.

Thompson extended the Cougars' lead to eight at 12-4 with a three and then to a game-high nine at 15-6 with a free throw. Lakeland chipped its way back into the game and finally took a lead at 34-33 with about two minutes left in the first half. The Lakers were able to hold on to the lead at the break at 39-38.

Lakeland kept its lead throughout the second until a Fobbs dunk finally drew the Cougars even at 64 midway through the second that started a series of ties for the next several minutes until Lakeland finally built a six-point lead with about six minutes to go.

Genesee got its first lead of the second with about four minutes left in the contest from a Caylen Williams layup at 80-79. The game went to a final tie at 82 with about two minutes to go before Thompson scored the next four and Peters added a free throw to seal the win.

The Cougars next host Monroe Community College Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
