Genesee Falls to Niagara in First Game of Second Semester

Genesee dropped its first game of the second semester at home on Sunday afternoon, coming up short against visiting Niagara College (Ont.), 92-89.

In a game that saw eight ties and 16 lead changes, the Cougars kept things interesting, despite trailing by 17 in the second half.

Brian Fobbs and Rahmel Thompson combined to score 28 second half points, and it was a Thompson layup that sparked a 12-2 run that cut a 76-59 Niagara lead down to 78-71 midway through the second half.

Brandon Adams converted a pair of free throws to get GCC to within 80-78 with just over five minutes to play, and hit a three with just over four minutes to go to give Genesee an 83-82 lead.

Niagara took the lead back on its next possession, but back-to-back GCC baskets put the Cougars in front by three with under two to go.

That would be it for the Genesee offense, however, as the Knights closed the game on a 7-1 run to escape with the win.

Fobbs led three Cougars' with 20 or more points, finishing the game with a game high 27. Thompson finished with 26 points and five rebounds, Brandon Adams added 20 points and five assists, and Justin Washington tallied 11 points and five rebounds.

Genesee (7-9) returns to action on Tuesday at Cayuga CC. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
