Cougars Win Two at Holiday Classic Tournament

The Genesee Community College men's basketball team won both games of its home Holiday Classic tournament this weekend, extending its win streak to three, with wins over the Community College of Rhode Island and St. John Fisher College (JV).

The Cougars came back from a 44-39 deficit at half on Saturday against CCRI to top the Knights 91-80.

Brandon Adams hit four three-point baskets on his way to a team-high 19 points off the bench to help GCC to the win.

Brandon Peters dished out a game-high six assists, five of which came in the second half, when the Cougars shot better than 42-percent to outscore CCRI by a 16-point margin.

Jaheem Page recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Jadji Fofana finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, Brian Fobbs added 16 points and six boards and Rahmel Thompson tallied 13 points.

Genesee forced 15 St. John Fisher turnovers on Sunday and scored 22 points off of those turnovers to down the Cardinals 86-72.

Thompson had a big game, finishing with 30 points on 12-21 shooting and 5-6 from the free-throw line.

GCC held a lead as large as 20 but played to an even half with Fisher after leading by 14 at the break.

Thompson led four scorers in double figures, which also included Fobbs, Page and Elias Ezenekwe, who each finished with 10 points apiece. Page also grabbed 10 rebounds to record his second double-double of the weekend and Peters again led Genesee in assists with eight.

With the pair of wins, Genesee improves to 5-6 on the season and will return to action at the Niagara County CC next Saturday and Sunday.
