Cougars Sweep to Clinch No. 2 Spot in West Division

Needing a pair of wins on Thursday to lock down the No. 2 seed in the Region III Division III Baseball Championships, the GCC baseball team took care of business by sweeping Finger Lakes CC, 6-3 in game one and 9-3 in game two.

Andrew Shapiro helped keep FLCC at bay until the Genesee bats came around in game one, holding the Lakers to just two runs during his six innings of work.
Finger Lakes took a 1-0 lead in the first after a leadoff walk came around to score on a double into left center field.

A GCC fielding error in the fourth led to FLCC's second run, but the Cougars got things going with the bats in the fifth. Cory Regnet led off the inning with a walk and Henry Delgado blasted a two run home run to left that tied the game at two. Manuel Tejeda got into scoring position with a double two batters later, and after a single by Brandon Henshaw, which set the all-time GCC career hits record with 104, sent Tejeda to third, Rodolfo Rodriguez gave GCC the lead with a sacrifice fly to put the Cougars in front 3-2.

Shapiro surrendered just a single walk and a hit by pitch during his final two innings of work, and left after the sixth after giving up two hits in the game and striking out four.

Genesee added to its lead with a three run sixth, including an RBI singles by Delgado and Tejeda, and went into the seventh with a 6-2 lead.

Jacob Cross allowed three hits and a run during the last frame, but locked down the win and struck out two, including the final batter of the game.

Delgado finished game one 2-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, Tejeda went 2-2, Rodriguez added two singles in four at bats and Regnet went 1-3 and scored two runs.

Henshaw kept this hits coming in game two, going 2-3 including a three run home run in the top of the seventh, an inning GCC scored four times.

Genesee took an early lead with three runs in the first after loading the bases on three straight walks. Casey Guary drove in a pair with an RBI single and an FLCC fielding error helped score a run.

Guary delivered again in the sixth with a two run single, and finished the game 2-4 with four RBI's.

Genesee finishes the regular season 29-17 and clinches the No. 2 seed in the Region III Division III West Division. The Cougars will host SUNY Adirandack in the opening round of the regional playoffs. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
