Suicide Squeeze Helps Cougars to Doubleheader Sweep of Onondaga

Genesee swept its sixth doubleheader of the season on Tuesday afternoon, taking both games against visiting Onondaga CC 9-3 in game one and 4-3 in walk-off style in game two.

The Cougars jumped in front with three runs in the second inning of the first game that broke a scoreless tie. Imanuel Gonzalez drove in GCC's first run with an RBI single in the frame, which was highlighted by a two-run Brandon Stephens home run.

Genesee added to its lead for starting pitcher Joseph DeFelice with five runs in the fifth, including run-scoring hits from Gonzalez and Stephens

Defelice threw six complete innings and allowed just two runs on four hits to earn the win. The sophomore struck out eight Lazers on the afternoon.

Casey Guary came in to finish OCC off, which loaded the bases and scored a run in the top of the seventh before Guary got three straight outs to hold the lead.

Stephens finished the game 2-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored, Gonzalez added a hit and scored twice, Guary doubled and scored a run and Brandon Henshaw added a single and scored a run.

Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel in game two, and GCC starter Cory Regnet didn't give up his first run until the fifth inning, when OCC took a 1-0 lead with a run on two hits.

Regnet was chased in the sixth when OCC added two more runs to take a 3-0 lead, but Genesee relievers Jacob Cross and Guary held the Lazers scoreless over the last inning plus.

GCC took advantage of the strong outing by the bullpen and got the bats going in the sixth. Henshaw led off the frame with a single and after a passed ball put him into scoring position; he scored on an RBI single from Gonzalez. The Cougars then loaded the bases and with two outs, got a two-run single from Henry Delgado to tie the game at three.

Guary pitched around two base runners in the top of the seventh, inducing a lineout and a looking strikeout to escape trouble.

The Cougars then loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Guary earned himself the win, laying down a suicide squeeze that scored Regnet to help the Cougars walk off with the win.

Delgado finished the game 2-4, Henshaw went 2-3 with a double and a run scored, Gonzalez added two hits and scored a run and Guary was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Genesee improves to 16-12 overall and 14-2 in Region III play. The Cougars will travel to Onondaga CC on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
