Strong Pitching Helps Cougars to Sixth and Seventh Straight Wins

The Genesee baseball team rolled to its sixth and seventh straight wins on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping visiting Tompkins Cortland Community College in a doubleheader. The Cougars won game one 9-3 and won game two 11-1 in six innings.

GCC got a complete game effort from starting pitcher Joseph DeFelice in game one, who allowed just three runs on six hits.

TC3 jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but Genesee responded with two in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. DeFelice helped himself out by reaching on a one out single and was driven home on an RBI double from Brandon Henshaw. Henshaw then touched the plate for Genesee's second run on a run-scoring single from Rodolfo Rodriguez.

DeFelice got defensive help in the third when right fielder Cory Regnet scaled the wall and took back what would have been a three-run TC3 home run to keep the Genesee lead safe.

Brandon Stephens and Casey Guary delivered RBI doubles during a four-run bottom of the third, and GCC added two more runs in the sixth to pad its lead.

DeFelice struck out seven batters in the game, and retired the Panthers in order in the fifth and seventh innings to secure the win.

 

Regnet took the mound in game two and turned in a complete game performance of his own, limiting TC3 to just one run on two hits in game two.

GCC took an early 3-0 lead after Henshaw and Rodriguez hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first. Henshaw delivered a two-run shot and Rodriguez followed with a solo home run.

Regnet retired the Panthers in order in three out of his six innings pitched and struck out nine batters.

Henry Delgado went 2-4 and scored two runs in the game and DeFelice, Rodriguez, Briann Castillo and Imanuel Gonzalez each collected two hits apiece.

Delgado delivered a two-run single in a five-run fourth for GCC and drove in another run on a single in the fifth.

Manuel Tejeda drew three walks and was 1-1 with a double and three runs scored.

Holding a 10-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Genesee got runners on with back to back bunt singles before Stephens drove in the 11th GCC run to send the Cougars to a mercy rule win.

Genesee improves to 11-9 on the season and will travel to TC3 on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
