The GCC baseball team took two from visiting SUNY Broome on Sunday afternoon, powering its way to an 18-2 mercy rule victory in game one and walking off in an extra inning game in game two, 4-3.
Broome got to GCC starter Josh Porter for a run in the top of the first in the first game on a solo home run, but the sophomore settled down and allowed just one run on five hits the rest of the way.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the third inning, scoring five times to take a 5-1 lead. Joseph DeFelice led off the frame with an infield single and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Cory Regnet . Taijiro Koyama then put GCC in front 2-1 with a run scoring single before a Henry Delgado double put runners at second and third for Manuel Tejeda, who drove both runs in with a double. Delgado then scored on an RBI triple from Brandon Henshaw to give Genesee a 5-1 lead.
Porter pitched around loaded bases in the third and give up his last run of the game in the fourth before GCC exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cougars strung together nine hits in the fourth including two-run doubles from Delgado and Henshaw and RBI's from Tejeda, DeFelice and Casey Guary.
Porter allowed just six hits in five innings of work and struck out four to earn the win.
Brandon Stephens allowed two runs, one earned, in the first inning of game two, but held the Hornets scoreless throughout the remainder of his outing.
DeFelice helped put the Cougars on the board in the second inning after reaching on a one out bloop single, and scored on a throwing error to cut the Broome lead down to 2-1.
Genesee tied the game at two with a run in the fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth for Jacob Cross who came in on relief after Stephens went five complete. Guary delivered an RBI single that scored DeFelice, who tripled with one out to set GCC up.
GCC couldn't close the door and allowed the Hornets to tie the game at three in the top of the seventh. After the Cougars went quietly in the bottom of the inning, the game went to extras
Neither team could put anything together in the eighth, but after Rodolfo Rodriguez retired the Hornets in order in the top of the ninth, Genesee loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Tejeda delivered a suicide squeeze that scored Regnet for the game-winning run.
Delgado went 3-4 in game two and DeFelice finished 2-4 and scored two runs.
Genesee improves to 8-9 overall on the season and will play a doubleheader at home on Tuesday against Tompkins Cortland CC. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
