Lakers Extend Win Streak to 5

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - After a back-and-forth start to the regular season, the Finger Lakes Community College baseball team has started to find its stride en route to a 14-9 record. The Lakers have come away victorious in their last five games, including back-to-back sweep against Genesee and Jamestown Community College. 

In last evening's doubleheader against the Jayhawks, the Lakers would take game one, 9-4, before completing the sweep with a mercy finish in game two, 11-1. In the opener, the Lakers lineup came up big with sophomores Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon)Alex Ahlstrom (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk), and Danny Melendez (Victor, N.Y./Victor) leading the charge. Goodness scored twice and drove in a run, while also stealing four bases. Ahlstrom contributed an RBI and added a steal of his own. Melendez added two RBIs and two stolen bases to his tally. Freshman Justin Angora (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) provided a spark with a triple and an RBI, while Matthew DiSanti (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Lakers would take advantage of their scoring opportunities, backed by solid pitching from freshman Trenton Muck (Lyndonville, N.Y./Lyndonville) who earned the win after throwing six innings and allowing four earned runs and three strikeouts. Classmate Alex Dungey (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) closed the game with a scoreless inning to secure the victory for the Lakers.

The nightcap saw the Lakers' offense erupt for 11 runs to earn the mercy finish. Freshman Justin Angora drove in three runs, including a double, while teammate Alex Ahlstrom added two RBIs with a double as well. Teammates Paulie Goodness and Ryan Donovan (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) each contributed to the win, with Goodness scoring two runs and Donovan driving in two runs. Freshman Drew Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) was stellar on the mound, pitching six innings with only one run allowed and four strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.

The Lakers will look to take their momentum into Sunday's doubleheader on the FLCC Multi-use Turf against Tompkins Cortland Community College at 12 and 2 PM.
