Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets in Opening Pod Weekend

The Hudson Valley Community College women's volleyball team opened the 2018 pod season Saturday afternoon at Genesee Community College. 

Vikings (0-1) vs. Monroe 

The Vikings dropped their first match of the day to Monroe in straight sets 3-0 (9-25, 17-25, 17-25). Hudson Valley combined for 13 kills and 17 digs with 13 hitting errors in the three-game match. 

Kirstin Wood (Colonie/Colonie) led the Vikings with three kills and five digs and Laura Grippin (Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) led the Vikings with three service aces.

Vikings (0-2) vs. Finger Lakes

The Vikings were defeated by Finger Lakes in straight sets 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 21-25). The Vikings combined for 20 kills, 13 assists and 32 digs in the second match of the day. 

Wood led the Vikings with nine kills and added seven digs. Grippin earned half of the Vikings digs as she finished with 16 in three sets of play. Shayla Pfendler (Ava/Adirondack) and Henna Matin (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) combined for 12 assists with Pfendler recording seven and Matin finishing with five assists. 

Vikings (0-3) vs. Genesee

In the final match of the day, the Vikings here defeated by Genesee in straight sets 3-0 (8-25, 11-25, 21-25). The Vikings combined for 13 kills, nine assists and 20 digs. 

Leureah Cummings (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Wood each finished the final match with three kills each. Matin led the Vikings with four assists and Pfendler added three more assists to her daily total. Grippin tallied 14 of the Vikings 20 digs. 

Volleyball finished the day with a 0-3 record and will return home on Wednesday, September 12 to play Herkimer at 6 p.m. inside McDonough Sports Complex in Troy, NY.
