Kabel Signs On for Double Duty with Cougars

The Genesee Community College softball and soccer teams will be adding a huge addition to their respective teams with the signing of Anna Kabel from Notre Dame High School April 2.

With the fall sports season long in the books, the focus on Kabel when she visited the Batavia Campus with her family to commit for next season was her outstanding softball play.

It was just a couple seasons back when Kabel was the impetus behind the Irish's Section VI Class D-I title with a 7-6 win over top-seeded Lyndonville.

The then-sophomore was the team's top hitter in the semifinal game against Honeoye that advanced Notre Dame to the championship game with four hits, before being the team's top hitter again in the championship game with three hits.

In the title game, she staked her team to a first-inning lead by belting a two-run homerun against the No. 1-ranked Lady Tigers, and then added a key double in the sixth inning that staked the Irish to a 6-1 lead.

A tough Lyndonville squad attempted to rally twice in successive innings and was finally successful in their last-ups that sent the game to a deciding seventh inning. Just one inning prior to that, Kabel thwarted the Lady Tigers' first rally attempt in the fifth inning with an inning-ending huge double play from her third-base position.

In addition to her team-leading three hits and outstanding defensive play in the field, she also scored a pair of runs while earning Section V Class D-I All-Tournament honors.

The Notre Dame High School honor student plans to enroll in a general studies degree plan while attending GCC while playing soccer in the fall and softball in the spring for the Cougars.
